Camille Miles

My name is Camille Miles. I’m currently attending Uncommon Bed-Stuy East School.

When I grow up, I’m going to be the mayor of New York City. I currently live with most of my family and a lively, bold pet cat named Bella. She’s a total diva.

Recently, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my grandmother. Since I was little, she has always encouraged me to dream big and stand up for myself and others. She’s my hero because of all the valuable lessons she has taught me about the importance of community, family, and being a positive role model for the people in my life. This is why I am going to be the mayor when I’m older.

Growing up, I always felt I was meant for bigger things, for helping others. I believe I can accomplish this as New York City’s mayor. I also love listening to music. It has defined so many important transitional chapters in my life. Music was an outlet for me when I struggled with expressing myself or wanted to tap into a space I felt most connected to. My favorite artists are Tyler, The Creator, Laufey, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER.

This fall, I joined a nonprofit program at my school called BK2BAMA. The program helps develop young, active leaders by teaching them about Black History and the Civil Rights Movement. I joined BK2BAMA to learn more about my own history, which I think is extremely important. BK2BAMA also gives me the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and grow as a person. During our spring trip to Alabama and Georgia, I’m most excited to visit the HBCUs Spelman College and Alabama State University. Visiting these schools and witnessing their incredible standard for Black excellence is sure to be inspiring.
