Isaiah Neblett

My name is Isaiah Neblett, a Guyanese eighth grader at Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate. I recently joined BK2BAMA and am enjoying it. We get to learn about history, have discussions and laugh with each other. BK2BAMA is a program that gives students the opportunity to travel to Alabama and Georgia to study the Civil Rights Movement and Black history.

Outside of history, I love basketball. Michael Jordan inspires me because he worked hard to become a great basketball player. Just like Michael Jordan, I would like to play in NBA when I grow up. Martin Luther King also inspires me because he changed American society for the better, despite all of the white Americans who strongly disagreed with him and made it difficult for him to end segregation and promote peace.

I am excited to visit Alabama and Georgia, especially because I want to meet with the activists who changed American History. In particular, I can’t wait to check out Malden Brothers Barbershop in Montgomery where Dr. King got his hair cut. I’m curious to learn more about Dr. King as a person, not just a historical leader. Maybe visiting this barbershop will help me better understand him.
