Madison Clarke
My name is Madison Clarke. I am twelve years old. My sister and I own a business called Madiana Juice Haven. We sell different types of juices and look forward to growing our business in the coming years. My favorite book is We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It shows what some people think of feminism and what it means to be a feminist. I believe a feminist wants equal rights for women and men. My hero is my sister because I can go to her without feeling uncomfortable, and she encourages me to do things I wouldn’t normally do. When I grow up, I want to be an entrepreneur because making a business interests me, and I would like to watch my business grow into a bigger company across the world.
My favorite Civil Rights figure is A. Philip Randolph because he created the first successful Black trade union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Randolph led this union and got it accepted into the American Federation of Labor.
BK2BAMA is a program that provides students the opportunity to study Black history and the Civil Rights Movement, but also the current challenges people of color face. I joined BK2BAMA because I want to learn more about Black history, and to teach other children, and even adults, about Black history and how much there is to that story. Through BK2BAMA, I have gotten to not only go on field trips across New York City, but will get to visit historic sites and people in Alabama and Georgia this April. I want to go to Alabama and Georgia to learn more about Black history, but also meet activists. I’m most excited about visiting HBCUs like Tuskegee University because these colleges provide Black Americans a great education now, and when segregation was in place.
